The main issue I see with autoconf macros is that they appear jumbled, which intimidates, and there are nasty little twists that catch the unwary. That makes a library of canned config tests very handy. You just use 'em. Detailed descriptions and version numbers and author names adds enough clutter by itself. Adding to that with SGML/DTD overhead adds just that much more clutter. Keep It Simple! Of course, that is what I am attempting to do with my http://autogen.sourceforge.net/conftest.html page. The final generation of output is broken for the moment. I need to rebuild AutoGen on the compile farm, and it is down right now. Oh, well. later. Works on my box....
