This is a solution that works for me on Linux/gcc and with the MSVC wrapper on Cygwin. I've removed the `conftext$ac_exeext' part because $ac_exeext defaults to "" and ls on Cygwin reports the virtual file conftest when the file is named `conftest.exe'.
