In fact I think the documentation should be fixed: the exit value is
not available, and I don't think it would be wise to try to preserve
it, even in ac_status for instance.
We can though, so we might want to debate about this.
My usual answer to this question is to look at AC_CHECK_SIZEOF:
communication from a sub program to configure should be done via
files.
