   Now, as it happens, sometimes CC running in AFS (a distributed
   filesystem) have problem with the locking mechanism for this file
   and hang indefinitely saying:

   SunWS_cache: Information: Database is locked, waiting....

It's not just AFS.  It also occurs with NFS.

   Indefinitely hanging programs aren't entirely uncommon, so perhaps
   there is proven method of handling this.

Not that I know of.  You just have to get a working compiler.

"configure" prefers gcc to CC, and gcc is shipped as part of Solaris 8,
so perhaps that will fix your problem.
