expr "..." : "\(.*\)" is limited on size!

Geoff Keating has just reported that Solaris' /usr/ucb/expr, as well
as SunOS's /usr/bin/expr, will fail if the first string is longer than
128 bytes.  We should probably re-think our use of expr in
_AC_SHELL_DIRNAME :-(
