I see this backward compatibility brought up quite often.  Is there/should
there be a switch to allow/disallow the deprecated macros?

I would think that the deprecated macros would be error and abort by default
unless a switch --allow-deprecated (or what ever) be given.  This would help to
clean up the configure.in scripts that still use them but would allow the user
to use them if wanted.
