It may look good, but I don't think it's worth it since it doesn't
work with /bin/sh on FreeBSD. ;-)

The parameters in $* are separated by the first character of IFS, so
the `ls -t' thing in sanity.m4 fails:

  "X $srcdir/configure conftestfile" != "X
  $srcdir/configure
  conftestfile"
