Anyway, regardless of the standards-lawyerese, it does appear that GNU
sed is incompatible with traditional sed in its behavior with the rhs;
I don't see the advantage of the incompatibility.

I'm not convinced by the standards-lawyerese at all in fact (the two statements conflict and would suggest a different treatment of LHS vs. RHS), but the incompatibility is a better argument. I can look at it in a short while; in the meanwhile, patches against CVS sed are welcome. Filing an interpretation request would also be welcome.
