The problem with the main branch is that even with make -j8 it takes
2:20 minutes to compile while 0:08 for the master branch (on my X1
Thinkpad 2017)

A kludge is to add an (fake) entry like
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---

The solution used in the main branch to obtain a version number for non git
repositories cannot be easily ported to master?
