Sunitha:pls share your experiences and relationship with arr
SPB:I was introduced to Malayalam films by ARR's father Mr.Shekhar who was then
a music conductor.I first saw Dileep when he was may be 3-4 years old and when
I was 22.I knew nothing of his music as he was only a kid.A few years later he
did a "one man show".He also performed on my birthday at an event organized by
Kalasagar.I got to know Rahman more closely when he was working with music
composer duo Raj-Koti.He was a modest talker. For many people Rahman is a
matinee idol.Lot of composers today follow and try to compose music like
him.But I would like to say not only you must follow Rahman as a composer but
you must also follow him as a human being.Despite the success he's had and
seen, inspite of the Oscars he is still the same old down to earth person. No
pride in what he's done,no ego towards his singers and co-workers.He even
praises all his singer's misnotes, records them and later edits them and gives
the clean version. To date he owns the Ambassador
he carried his musical instuments in,he still lives in his same old house in
the small street, not a huge dresser and no 'who are you' posing after all that
he has achieved.
When I went for the recording of Roja,I congratulated Dileep on his chance to
work with such a good organization and director. To this Rahman said,"Sir I'm
just a 22 year 'bacha' thrown into the mix with music greats like MSV and
Illaiyaraja.I guess I'll only last for 5 years max after which it's me,my
keyboard and my jingles again".I met Rahman after 5 years and asked 'Dileep how
come you are still here?' and he said,"Sir I think god has given me another
5".Another 5 years and I said to Rahman there is no more going back.God has
just stuck you here.As you were moving forward god has been sealing all the
doors behind you so you won't have to go back.Such is the modesty of this great
man and Allah keeps this man like that,-'Allah Rakha'
