I must say at the outset, that it is indeed remarkable to see the reactions of so many people after the release of each and every Rahman album. I dont think any composer in our industry has such an ardent following....thats great news.. anyway,
Blue in my opinion is by no means a great album. It is simply a good album which does not any have permanent value..( 2 yrs from now..very few ppl will be listening to 'blue' songs with as much affection as today). Chiggy Wiggy is enjoyable for the initial Kylie Minogue section. Her voice is fine, and the song does invoke some feeling of joy and enthusiasm..but i felt sonu nigams part kinda screwed it up...it sounded as if the punjabi bit was forcibly put in to craete a great song, but unfortunately the song as a whole is disappointing....could have been much better...also the lyrics are kinda lame (a major downer for this soundtrack as a whole). Aaj dil Gustakh is one notch above 'chiggy wiggy', but the effect wears out after the initial high. Rahman creates a smooth, running rhytm and imparts a feel good factor to this song...people have mentioned the use of unconventional words by Rahman in his songs....in this case the 'aa sa aa' bit just doesnt live up to any standard....There is something missing in this otherwise decent love song. Fiqrana...Now heres what I was waiting for!! This is one of the best songs on this soundtrack...ppl have talked about the heavy programming in this album....In fiqrana this programming pays off and we are subjected to a masterful song..Rahman playing with a whole lot of sounds...the drums, pads,,,synthesized to a perfection....The rhythm is in place and the songs resonates with the right amount of zest and energy....Vijay Prakashs singing is good....and Rahman technical prowess is on full display here...A stunning song! Bhoola Tujhe...my second favorite song!!,.....showcases the side of Rahman we have seen so often in 100's of songs....His orchestration is superb...at the same time...the song brims with melody and soul...the first couple of minutes leave you spellbound as Rahman orchestrates and uses the guitar strings to perfection..Lyrics here are better than the other songs....and with time...this song certainly grows on u...just one minus tho...ppl have talked about the poor sound quality of 'Blue'....It certainly is true for this song..where U just cannot grasp some of the words being sung...i dunno if its Rashid ali's singing or the sound engineering which is to blame..but it leaves something to be desired...nevertheless a wonderful composition.... Rehnuma....Very reminiscent of 'Khuda Hafiz' from Yuva...Once again Rahmans goes technical with a lotta sounds and instruments played here....Shreya Ghosal's vocals have surely been programmed here..to sound sensuous....it does pay off ..butt his song on the whole is pretty flat...Sonu Nigam plays more of a supporting singers role here...in this case the sounds are too loud and listening to this song is not as rewarding as one would expect.....I would prefer 'Khuda Hafiz' over this one....Rahmans im sure is experimenting with this piece...but this one doesnt work for me....expected better! Blue Theme...is an incredible piece of music ...with several singers being roped in...Blue Theme is a barrage of music....Lovers of the western rap genre would like this one...The trademark Rahman touches are heard in many parts...however it is devoid of any real soul ( which one may not expect from a piece such as this)....the melody is sometimes discontinous...and once again it will take time to grow on u... 'Blue' has left me with mixed feelings. I would like to term it as an uncharacteristic Rahman album in that it showcases a different side of Rahman as a music composer..(and also a programmer). While Fiqrana and Bhoola Tujhe are definitely impressive , the other songs leave a void of sorts. We may marvel at Rahmans skills of producing diff sounds and composing unique melodies...we also neeed to think about the utility of these songs...I would like to think that some of the songs are in tune with the movie's subject. As Blue is an action film, the songs have that pacy, racy and youthful feel to them..(and are without a doubt , situational)...but just purely as a music album..Blue is certainly nowhere close to being perfect. i would give Blue 3 stars out of 5. Blue: *** (Just about)
