declared, “That’s also his Oscar night outfit,” referring to the bandhgala.

However, Bal’s declarations went kaput as Rahman walked the red carpet in a
black Lanvin tuxedo teamed with a

Paul tie, before changing into a traditional sherwani
designed by Sabyasachi Mukherjee for his live performance.

Even Rahman’s better half Saira was seen in a Sabyasachi creation at the
grand event. The Kolkata-based
designer<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/4182834.cms#>stated,
“I’m the only Indian designer who has made clothes for AR Rahman for
the occasion. I’ve designed a sherwani for him and two ethnic ensembles for
his wife for the big Oscar weekend.” All three ensembles are from the
designer’s

collection.

“Saira dresses traditionally and she didn’t want to change her style just
because it was the Oscar red carpet,” Sabyasachi added.

A source had earlier revealed, “Rahman was shown a lot of options -- some
7-8 outfits to be worn for the main ceremony. But he finally decided on the
grey tux shirt and black tuxedo by Lanvin as it has a classic air about it."

Though Rahman preferred donning a formal look for the red carpet, but for
his performance the Bong designer gave him a traditional Indian look
complete with a black sherwani worn with a black kurta and a white Aligarhi .

So, what made Rahman ditch Bal at the last moment and opt for Sabyasachi
instead? “We zeroed in on Sabyasachi for the sherwani as he is the best. We
had to make sure that Rahman was wearing something comfortable while
performing. So what better than a sherwani and that too a Sabyasachi one,"
declared Rahman’s stylist Vijayeta Kumar.

When contacted for explanations about the last moment changes, Rohit Bal was
not available for comment.
