AR Rahman (wearing the black bandhgala) and Danny Boyle at the BAFTA awards
global recognition coming his way.
And being on the red carpet so often seems to have made him a little
label-savvy. The black bandhgala he wore to the BAFTA awards was a designer
outfit by Rohit Bal. That's also his Oscar night outfit, says Gudda.
"He has bought a lot of my clothes from Chennai too," says Gudda. "This
time, his wife coordinated everything for him. She asked me to design his
attire for BAFTA and the Oscars. It was a great honour for me because he is
an Indian and a genius." Initially, he says, Rahman was a bit apprehensive
about wearing a bandhgala to BAFTA because the dress code there is strictly
black, and most of the men wear tuxedos.
However, the organisers told them that it was okay if he wore a traditional
Indian dress. So Rahman's wife sent me a sample of his clothes from Chennai,
and that was all I needed for his measurements. I made a black bandhgala for
him, with very subtle embroidery at the neckline. It is so minimal that one
can hardly see it. I was clearly told by his wife that it had to be simple.
I was very happy when he won the BAFTA and now I have my fingers crossed for
the Oscars. I know he will win it too!" says Gudda.
