Gurus does not mean that they have to literaly teach you. Even in recordings when you see and learn stuff from people..it is still considered they are your gurus in someway. It is well known that ARR did learn from Ilayaraja at some point in terms of flim recordings as a session musician. He must have also learned from others in some way too so saying IR as one guru is no harm.
