If Mr. Singh wants Rahman to compose more ghazals, why couldn't he have just said "Rahman is so talented, he really should compose some good ghazals and I would love to sing for him." If he had said that, nobody would take offense and in fact all of us would be cheering the union of ARR and Jagjit.
Even if he meant to say what he clarified later, what he first stated came out very accusatory and insulting in tone. I find Mr. Singh to be a very blunt person, not just from this interview, but from previous interviews and observed interactions. Mr. Singh should know that is it not up to Rahman to include Ghazals in films.
