*DIRECTOR VIKRAMAN ON RAHMANIA – PART I *

* *

Q :- Were you an asst Director before becoming a Director, or that you
became a Director straight by yourself ?

Ans :- I was an Asst director for a period of 7 years. Earlier I was with
Director Manivannan. I worked as a Co Director with Parthiban for Pudiya
Padhai.

Q :- How was the experience doing " Pudiya Mannargal" with Rahman ?

Ans :- I knew Rahman sir before doing that movie. He had played Keyboard in
my earlier movie " Pudhu Vasantam". This was known to me , after he himself
said this to me. I was about to do a movie, " Pesa Ninaipadhellam", when an
artist who was working with the movie told me that there is an excellent
Music Director who had come to the field new, and who did great music for
Roja. He played that cassette to me in the car ( at that time, there was no
CDs available ) . I liked the orchestration, and it sounded different. The
other significant thing is that he also does melody, and that sounds
different. The sound was like hearing a Western Album. I was amazed by the
Audio Quality that I could hear in Rahman sir 's music. I became a fan at
that very moment. At that time, he had done only two films and was doing
Gentleman.

At that time, Actor Arjun gave me the songs from Gentleman, and told that
the songs were superb. The Audio also didn't get released at that time, and
Arjun has been listening to the same in a personal note. When I determined
to do Pudiya Mannargal, I went to Rahman and requested him to do the music
for the movie. The story didn't have that much scope for his music. He
agreed and did it under my compulsion. It was a slight mistake from my side.
If we would have worked together for a movie like " Poove Unakagga" , it
would have been excellent.

Q :- Why didn't you join with Rahman for your future movies ?

Ans : It has been so many times, since I wanted to work with him, and even
recently, two years back, I met him and we were discussing about working
together. I told him two stories. One was Chennai Kadhal, which got released
recently. Rahman Sir told, that lets be careful this next time, and lets not
make a mistake like what happened for Pudiya Mannargal. He told, that we
should do a good movie. So saying, I narrated another story, which he liked
very much. We both have a common friend in Canada, and Rahman Sir had also
told that friend, as to why I am not doing that movie ( the second one ) .

I am still a big fan of Rahman Sir. Now also, when I listened to the songs
in Sillenu oru Kaadhal, I get moved by the music. I also loved Sakkarakatti,
our S.J. Suryah's Anbe aaruyire. I feel that after M.S.Vishwanthan, there is
no one other than Rahman , who can provide us with such haunting melodies. A
melody which will remain fresh even after 25 years. He is an excellent Music
Director.

Q :- " Nee Kattum Selai" – song

When doing that song, he was coming up with so many folk tunes, but nothing
was giving him that satisfaction. Then, he told us to write the lyrics for
which he would put the tune. It was a song, for which the tune was put after
the lyrics were written.
