You are exactly right, but totally wrong :)
as far as technology is concerned, Rahman drove the change in the Indian
music scenario. we should be glad that he brought a whirlwind change .
doesnt matter if not everybody had/has chance to appreciate what he does. In
the future, ppl will look bk & wonder .

ARR himself told in an interview - to Aravind AM's question - on why he adds
minute sounds that very few may actually be able to recognise.

Another way to look at your Qn is this:
if it doesnt make any difference to upgrading my music system, what is the
incentive for me to do so ?
I'm glad ARR is doing things at the highest possible Quality in terms of
Technology.
