'We don't want 40 hits in a year'
Our journey...
Vishal: It all started with Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi for which we were guest
composers. We first met then and when we heard each other's work, we thought
why not get together and hit it? We've had a roller-coaster of a year. There's
been
Cash, Ta Ra Rum Pum, Honeymoon Travels and now Om Shanti Om. If you notice, all
four movies are different from each other and required music that could
support the script.
Our style...
Shekhar: We work to create pieces which people will recognise as ours.At the
same time we don't want to be monotonous.
We're different...
Vishal: Our music stands out because we are so different as musicians. If
Shekhar comes from a classical background, I'm part of a rock band, Pentagram.
There's a certain madness in our compositions.
Our inspiration...
Vishal: We draw inspiration from Pancham da. In fact, when we came together, we
won the RD Burman Award for Jhankaar Beats. We felt honoured to have won an
award for a movie that revolves around Pancham da's music. Shekhar: When we
had to create 70s melody for OSO, Burman saab was all we had on our minds.
OSO...
Shekhar: We finished recording the tracks for OSO in seven days. All the songs
in OSO were dictated by the script. The movie moves from the '70s to 2007 and
so does the music. When Farah read us the script, she knew exactly where she
wanted which song. In fact, the climax song just took 20 minutes because Nic
Rain and James Fitzpatrick who have provided the music for most Bond films
helped us in shaping it with 200 other musicians.
Farah fans...
Vishal: Farah is frank, fun and honest. Shekhar: She's crazy too and so are
we. Maybe when two crazy things meet, there's magic. As a director she knows
her job well; she's an encyclopedia of Bollywood cinema.
Mentors...
Vishal: Javed (Akhtar) saab is so young at heart he could make us feel old. He
has an amazing sense of humour and his philosophies are mindblowing.
Honeymoon Travels, Ta Ra Rum Pum and now OSO, every project with him has been
a learning experience.
AR Rehman...
Vishal: Initially we made headlines alongside
AR for having a similar style in Salaam Namaste as he did in Swades and now
for replacing him in OSO. It feels good that people consider us to be in the
same category as him, but at the same time I would make it clear that
Vishal-Shekhar will never copy or steal any music.
Shekhar: Shah Rukh invited me to his home and told me how things were not
working out with AR due to various reasons and that he wanted us to be a part
of this project. We got OSO because both Shah Rukh and Farah loved our work.
Where we want to be...
Vishal: We don't want 40 hits in a year or success year after year. We just
want to create something that's evergreen, something that will be remembered
for a long time.
