Hi all,

Singer Sriram (of 'Vetri Kodi Kattu' and 'Thiruppachi AruvaaLa' was the guest
on yesterday's show.

(Usual disclaimer: Please excuse if there are inaccuracies... typing this mail
from memory)

Sriram:
"I am basically a flautist and never had any idea that I will get into playback
singing. I had accompanied my wife Baby for a recording for A.R.Rahman. My wife
is a carnatic singer and had not sung for film music before. She was scared and
was hence haveing problems getting what AR exactly wanted! I went upto ARR who
was at the console and told him that I'll go and help her. I told him that I'm
a musician too and he agreed. I went inside and sang to let her know what
Rahman wants.. Rahman was impressed with that and he called me over to sing the
'jathis' in "Dheem Tare" (from Takshak).... That's how I became playback singer"

"I had also lent my voice for 'Raga Dance' composed by ARR in Vanessa Mae's
Choreography. (the starting "thadhingina ththom... bit") The funniest part was
I had no clue that it was for Choreography! Few months later, for some ARR
related whow, they were playing this track before the show started and I said
"OMG.. this is my voice"... A person there told me "This is an international
album, not a film song. Must be someone else"!!! And then, Rahman himself
confirmed that it was my voice!! Usually, singers note down in their diary,
all the recordings that they have done, the movies for which they have sung
etc. But I have never done that, and so I get surprises like this!!

Even when I had recorded 'Vetri Kodi Kattu' I had no clue it was for a Rajni
movie. Only after the recording was over, Rahman called me and told me "Do you
know for what movie u have sung just now? Rajni's Padayappa!!" I was so
thrilled!!!"

"I do compose songs and try my had at recording.... When I have some technical
difficulty, I call up Rahman. So down-to-earth is Rahman that he actually helps
me out and advises me about recording techniques despite all his busy schedule
of assignments and international commitments. He also calls me up and discusses
with me any latest technology in music or recording that he comes across"

Sriram is the guest for next friday's show as well... so, i will continue next
week!

Cheers
Aravind
