Well said anish but you have forgotten something here.
THink of media today and yesterday. During IRs time
there was only radio, no tv except for doordarshan we
know what kind of programs they telecast. People will
listen to a song (a good number) once a week(max) . If
u have to listen to a good song again you will have to
watch the movie again. Its not possible. But what is
happening today. Rahmans album is bought approx by a
lakh in 3 days of release. This gets on to the
internet. On the day of release die hard fans listen
to it for some 20 times easily no Exauguration. I
personally listen to a new album atleast 10 times in
the first 3 days. Plus videos on net and tv channels
if possible. Die hard rahman fans watch movies twice
just for the music and video if its good. I bet best
of IR songs might have been replayed some 100 times
till this date may be 500 times or mai b 1000. I can
sure say I have watched and listened to lagaan, roja ,
RDB , vande mataram , Km , Uyrie , Bombay, new york
nagaram more than that. Rahman revolutionized Indian
music, TV channels, way we listen to songs and so
on...

If you call Only you from vande mataram and new york
nagaram as just techinacally good songs then i am
sorry, u r not ready to appreciate good music. Dont
call apne desh ki mitti from subhash chandra bose as a
mere technicaly sound one and ofcourse a lullaby
number from the same album. I dont know how many times
i have listened to sivaji numbers. I wake up almost
everyday with endrendrum punnagai - best way to begin.

To add am a die hard fan of IR too, i rembr every
movie of his atleast 400 and songs in it. So IR fans
dont get irritated but this the truth. Rahman has
managed to cross boundaries. Never say IR did not have
the help of technology and media, he is still scoring
music but without any success. Rahman came in 92 IR
was at his peak during this time. I dont know why or
how rahman could catch up with both hindi and tamil
audience when the rest were dying in their den. So its
not just technology or media - there is something more
to it - ITS GREAT MUSIC. When something is repeated
too many times - its natural it stays in mind . It
lingers up in there. I am sure i will listen to koon
chala, munbe va, theendai mei theendai and narumugaiye
, sarfarosh ki tamana , pachail killigal tholodu,
gopalanuhare , chale chalo, ishwar allah, pukar in my
death bed and sure atleast lakh in this earth will.
Stop comparing rahman or music. See what your seeing.
Art is best enjoyed that way. Picaso and mischelangelo
are not the same , bach and mozart arent same, rahman
and illayaraja arnt same, sachin , ponting , lara
arent same, viv richards and gavaskar arent saem,
kumble warne and murali arent same, shankar and mani
ratnam arent same, king kahan big b and aamir arent
similar but they all have something in common - they
are LEGENDS.

WARNING - NEVER AGAIN TALK ABOUT CRAPS LIKE HJ here.
THIS IS A DIVINE PLACE FOR FANS LIKE ME. WHEN I AM IN
MOSQUE I PRAY ALLAH, WHEN I AM IN CHURCH I PRAY JESUS
, THIS IS FOR RAHMAN _ TALK ABOUT RAHMAN and nothing
else.
