boss "A R Rahman". Though the time I was "literally" close to him was
just few minutes, it is a dream for a "die hard" fan like me (rather
it is a dream for all of us in this group). I'll narrate my
experience and I feel very happy sharing this with our group:
>
> It was Feb 20 - 2003. Thursday. India Pistols Ground, Taramani,
Chennai. Around 9:00 PM. The day before the "Unity of Light" live
concert. Four of our friends decided to go to the concert together.
So I went with my dad. mom and brother to get the tickets for the
concert (from LandMark). It was Rs.250 ticket. After we got the
ticket, we just thought of going and seeing the stage and light
arrangements for the next day's concert. Our car approached slowly
near the ground. Heavy police security. Crowd near the gate. But I
never thought our Boss will be in there, till I started to hear the
sounds gradually filling my ears as we approached the venue. Then I
decided, "I have to see him in there!!!";
>
> I was skeptical whether I'll be able to make it inside, as there
was already a crowd waiting near the gate to enter and have
a "Dharshan" of our Boss. Seeing the excitement of me and my brother,
my dad approached the gate security and showed his identity. WE WERE
ALLOWED INSIDE. Man, I cannot explain that moment. I was walking from
the back of the stage I could hear our Boss speaking something. But
nothing went into my senses, as my only aim then was to "SEE" the
musical icon of India.

> Finally, "I SAW HIM". What a moment! Myself and my brother was
simply standing and starring at him, unable to believe that it was a
reality and not a dream.
>
> The rehersal for Baba was going on. He was instructing the Dholak
player: "Dippu Dippu Adi" (meaning, play the Dippu Dippu beat). He
started playing and our Boss was fine with that. I was seeing a so
many singers who have worked with Rahman roaming around near me.
Shankar Mahadevan (who was on the stage for Dippu Dippu),
Swarnalatha, Blaze, Hariharan, Vasunthra Das were there to mention a
few.
>
> Our Boss was wearing a black coat and he was keeping himself
cool. (But a bit nervous I guess for the next day's concert). He had
nearly 3 large keyboards (minimum 7 octaves) surrounding him. He was
giving so many improvements to the song as the practice was going on.
No joke. He is simply great. The speaker system was amazing. It was
like another "mini" stage in front of the main stage. (Slightly
inside the audience chairs). I then realized that live "mixing" was
not an easy job. That too for our Boss's songs!!! When Keith Peters
struck pieces from his instrument, the whole air was filled with low
frequency "Base". Simply Amazing!!!!!
>
> Rehearsal of many songs was on. It was 10:30. It was becoming
cold. I saw our Boss preparing for something. I and my brother went
near the stage out of curiosity. We guessed it has to be for his
dinner. We were right. He was coming down from the stage. It was the
right time for us to get his "AUTOGRAPH". We followed him. Many
would'nt have noticed his slipping from the stage. There was a tent
near by and he went in it. There was a plate on a table. But as soon
as he went in, a screen was pulled and it covered the entrance. But
as and when a mild wind blew, I was able to see our Boss in there. He
did not start his food. He was having a casual chat with Suhasini
(Maniratnam) and the event organizer. He did not have much food.
Infact nothing, I could say.
>
> Now came the moment. He was coming out of his tent. We rushed
near him. Suddenly to my surprise (and anger) and few other fans
thronged at him. I guessed they should've also waited like me outside
and peeping. "Rahman and me" face to face, what a moment. I some how
gathered a pen and got my dad's visiting card for his autograph. But
I was not sure if he will like to write on a visiting card. He proved
he is a great man. Did not tell anything. Gave a smile (what a smile)
signed and proceeded on to the stage. Moment of my life. !!!!! There
is no necessity for a person like him to come out and have a minute
with common people standing outside and sign on a bit paper. He is
simply great!!!
>
> The rehearsal proceeded. I was till 12:30 in the night. The other
songs I saw in the rehearsal were "B to the A - BABA" by
Blaze, "Porale" by Swarna, "Yeh Yeh enna acchu" by Vasunthra. All
live. So close. So near. Great experience. Next day was the show.
That was another great experience all together. The real concert was
a great day, as I got my appointment order for my campus interview.
Unforgettable moments !!!!!

small, it was not a trivial experience. Am sure this will be a dream
for most of his fans. I think am fortunate enough in my life to get
this experience. I hope and wish all gets this kind of experience to
see him at least once in the life!

When? Where? How? Will share that soon.
