ARR and Shanker Mahadevan are childhood friends...
So as they grew up together during a similar time span and perhaps talked with each other about the same sort of ideas....
those ideas may be embedded somewhere in thier subconscious ...
and now coming out of the subconcious in the form of similar tunes!
In psychology there is a mention of a theory about such a transfer of thoughts that Gajanan you have mentioned below... I'll try and dig it out if any one is interested.

Conceiving the idea in the hour of need and implementing it to bring it to fruition is what matters. And this is the same here too. ARR is genius. SEL is pretty damn good. A tad short of genius, maybe! But - both are extremely creative! Much better than the scores of Bollywood composers.
