Hi: I had heard the songs of Water, quite a few months back -- though in a low quality. Even then, the songs had mesmerized me. And yes - its not only 10/10..its far beyond that!
However, now I get the CD of Water, and I am quite surprised with various things: [1] Bhangari marori missing! This has already been mentioned in the forum. I can still not think of a reason why this gem was missing. Look forward for it in the Indian version of Water (if there is one). [2] Why the enhancements of the songs? The final version of Water, seems to have gone through quite a bit of 'finishing' touches..and I am finding quite a few of them 'unpleasant'. For instance, one of the best things in Sham Rang was the powerful ending. And now the effect is disturbed by the echo of 'bol zor se'....the feeling I now get is like a wonderful sunset with smoke spoiling it! Actually, there seems to be quite a bit of 'echo' voices in Sham Rang. The repetition of the phrases 'bol zor se' is really unecessary..and the original simplicity was FAR better, IMHO. [3] Along with the vocal changes, the addition of deep strings is very noticable. In some cases, it does enhance the song..but in most of the other, it now overpowers the original melody. During the later parts of Chanan, the strings are quite overpowering and distracting..from what was originally a great combination of the vocal and santoor. ---- While watching the making of Bombay Dreams, the writer and choregrapher (Farah Khan) did mention Rahman's tendency to keep working on the song even after its done. I think in this case, the 'working' might have gone a bit too far. However, I do understand that I might just be a bit sad, since I hear something unexpected (from the previous version)..and I might need to get used to it, and hear the sounds more. Hopefully, the Indian version will overcome the possible shortcomings of this orchestration (and missing song). And having said that, the melody of these songs do remain intact..and I will cherish this as one of Rahman's finest creations!! -Ricky ------------------------ Yahoo!
