Braving the rains for Rahman
New Indian Express

BANGALORE: Undeterred by the heavy rains that lashed Palace Grounds on
Saturday, Bangaloreans
with an unrelenting quench for the music of wizkid maestro A R Rehman filled
the air with
rhythmic cries of ‘‘AR! AR!’’ Chairs were the perfect shield as the audience
braved the heavy
downpour with screams and shouts of ‘‘A.R. Rehman, we love you!’’ It was to be
a unique and
exciting event, because apart from the sound, it was the visual spectacle
viewed by many with
3D glasses.

With the downpour casting a pall of gloom, the crowd waited anxiously and the
artists prayed in
vain. So it was a bolt from the blue when all of a sudden the great musician
emerged on the
stage amidst hooting, howling and whistling.

‘‘We love you Bangaloreans. You are an amazing crowd, which we have never seen
before. You
deserve the best and it will be big.’’ His sheer appearance and charismatic
appeal mesmerised
the crowd, which was ready to wait for one hour. An instrumental drum number
whetted their
appetite, followed by solos of Kailash Kher, and VJ Rizvi.

The evening then went into an overdrive with a bang: colourful lights and
crackers heralded
Rehman as he emerged in white and blasted the stage with ‘‘Fana Fana.’’ ‘‘‘Hone
Do’’ was what
the crowd sang in unison and Rehman was carried away. The audience was in for a
surprise with
Hariharan belting out the Tamil ‘song Telephone Mani Pol.’’ Language was no bar
as the song had
the crowd in splits.

This was followed by ‘‘Mangal, Mangal’’ by Kailash Kher, a popular singer
described as another
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the making. Alka Yagnik crooned a slow number
‘‘Mehendi.’’ And then it
was Madhushree with ‘Hum Hain Is Pal Yahan’

Then there was a surprise: a song in Kannada that made the crowd’s day or
evening, something
for which the rain was worth braving.

Another big surprise that delighted everyone was a song for peace. Not to speak
of the ever
popular ‘‘Hamma, Hamma’ and ‘‘Mustapha,’’ the signature tunes that have made
Rehman a legend
among the masses.

"We neglect our cities at our peril. For, in neglecting them, we neglect the
nation."
-John F. Kennedy
