This is on serial console isn't it? You wouldn't expect input from USB HIDs to show up there. I think it will need to be switched to HDMI console to be able to see anything from those input devices. I don't know if that works on 3b or not (it does on 4). If it does then 'set tty fb0' at the boot loader would probably do the trick.
