I'm biased, I always run current. :)
If you really want to stick with release+patches, you can build from
source, following the -stable code path.  However, you will also have
to build packages from source, too.  It's usually easier (and just a
little more exciting, in the mostly fun way) to run -current, though
building from source has its own excitements (however, more terror
than fun usually).  In my opinion.
