The Diggers appeared in the Spring of 1649 just after King Charles II was
executed by Oliver Cromwell at the end of the English Civil war. Sensing that
depopulation, enclosure and land ownership had been at the heart of the
conflict they embarked on a heroic mission to make the Earth 'A Common Treasury
For All'.

350 years later, in April 1999, there were celebrations and a month-long land
occupation at 'the Beverley Hills of Britain' St George's Hill private gated
estate in Weybridge, SW London. There we honoured Gerrard Winstanley, William
Everard and the Diggers' vision and courage in a 350 person strong march from
Weybridge to the hill. More at The Diggers' pages And The Land Is Ours history
pages too.
