The man page could note that not using:
<package>&M
Mark <package> as having been automatically installed.
<package>&m
Mark <package> as having been manually installed.
means don't change current mark.
In particular
# aptitude install somepak
will not unmark somepak as automatically installed, if that's what it
currently is marked as.
On the other hand,
# aptitude install somepak
not mark somepak as automatically installed, if it is not already installed.
