No reply so I'll answer my own question for those playing along at
home:  A frame seems to be a single sample-time.  Ie. if you're
playing audio at 44.1khz and you set the periodic notification for
44100 frames, you'll be notified once per second, reguardless of the
sample size or number of channels.
