*States of matter* are the distinct forms that different phases<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_(matter)> of matter <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matter> take on. Three states of matter are known in everyday experience: solid<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid> , liquid <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid>, and gas<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas> .
