Mark, CC'ing you only because I don't have the links to your site and
your books to provide to the OP, and just in case you don't see this
thread.

WARNING: Personal opinion follows in the next paragraph....don't turn
this into a war or anything.

While I find the developers guide a great reference, I would hardly advise
a beginner to start with it alone.

To the OP: use the developers guide as a reference, and use it often.
Always check there before asking your question here, as you will often
find your answer with a few seconds worth of searching, especially after
you get more adapted to the best search terms to use...but I highly
recommend that you start with a good beginner-level book. Mark Murphy
has some great books, and I seem to recall that at least one of his is
beginner-level. I don't have the link off-hand, but hopefully he'll
chime in here with it and a pointer to which book(s) you should start
with. There are othes, too...lots of them. Some are for beginners, some
aren't.

If you don't know Java, you should get a good book on learning Java, as
well. Buy one that will serve as both a beginner's guide and as a
reference, or buy two books, one for both.

Also look online for tutorials for both Android and Java development.

And I also suggest that you subscribe to
[email protected] along with this list.

Hope this helps.
