phones like the galaxy s do a similar thing where /mnt/sdcard is the internal memory and /mnt/sdcard/external_sd/ is the actual SD
personally I ended up kludging a solution where I query android.os.Build.MODEL and switch on it. I think it might be a legacy issue to do with having large amount of internal storage but who knows...
