Thank you very much Lei -- I can reproduce it now (and I've submitted a fix so this will be resolved in the next version). The part I was missing was creating a new XML file without using the XML template. There was a bug which caused infinite recursion when the XML menu file to be opened was empty, which doesn't happen with the XML templates.
