I have thought of this possibility too. But but when two phones are only online at different times, they may never have a chance to synchronize. Is the only save possibility to synchronize them through an independent server? Could GTalk in the future store and deliver offline intents like offline messages? Or can we assume that most of the phones will be online most of the time? I just wondered if there was some official guideline on this issue.
