degraded mode

I am getting the following error when backing up multiple disks on a sun box   FAIL driver <hostname> /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s7 2003112 2 [can’t dump no-hold disk in degraded mode]   This error occurs on all backups while all other file systems are being backed up fine What is degraded mode?
