No, just plain ALSA.
As per a suggestion on StackExchange i tried installing pulseaudio
(and all of it's X11 dependencies ;), but that didn't help either. The
pulseaudio controls do not offer any way to "boost" the volume,
either.

No, just a slider control. Pulling it all the way "up" yields the good
result i posted graphically.

I don't remember what was printed on the packaging, I had the adapter
in my bin full of stuff for quite a while (2+ years). I have to admit
I haven't asked the vendor, as
http://www.cmedia.com.tw/support/os_support_mapping shows (as always)
no official support for linux. Which, as always, let's me assume the
worst ("Sorry, but.....").
