Interesting. I got inconsistent results a few times and found more
vestiges of pulseaudio. I removed the pulseaudio package, deleted
/usr/local/alsa/alsa.conf.d (which made pulse the default) and cold
booted.

Now the instance I start up first, plays. The instance I start up
second, does not play. The one that does not play produces this
output:

Unable to set hw params for playback: Broken pipe
Setting of hwparams failed: Broken pipe

When this happens, I see this in dmesg:

These USB sound cards are plugged into onboard USB ports[1]. The only
other things plugged in are my keyboard and mouse (plugged into a USB
hub). The sound devices are not plugged into the hub.

My lsusb (-v was too big for the list) and lspci -v output are attached.

Is there hope for me?
