Actually now I think about it, the guy in that Gentoo thread says he got it working with a Terratec Aureon 5.1 USB MkII. One of those is significantly cheaper than a home theatre system. I'll try to contact him as I want to double check whether he really got it working. Those posts were from years ago though.
