have you tried to be a little more specific on your usage? $ speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:0 $ aplay -D hw:0 -t wav -f S16_LE -r 48000 Vincent.wav $ arecord -D hw:0 -t wav -f S16_LE -r 48000 file.wav IME those apps don't have very good psychic abilities. And the defaults they assume may or may not be supported by your soundcard. And/or may not match the soundfile you're trying to play. Kind of neat to make a screetching trumpet sound like a tuba at -r 22050. Or at the 8000 default.
