Sorry, it was an error when copy pasting to the email. The real .asoundrc is
as:
pcm.dsp0 {
type plug
slave.pcm "dmix"
}
ctl.mixer0 {
type hw
card 0
}

This config does not mention dmix at all.. try changing slave.pcm to
"dmix:0"
