What version of Gnome do you use?
First of all there is no "System" menu item here (see attached 
Gnome_Menubar.jpg). When I choose "Desktop->Preferences->Sound" I can select 
some sound files (see Gnome_Sound_Preferences1.jpg) and configure the system 
beep (see Gnome_Sound_Preferences2.jpg). Where do I find the stuff you are 
talking about?
