I went with FreeBob and an FA-66 firewire audio interface in order to avoid all
the nightmares I was having with the hda-intel chip. thought I could avoid the
ALSA entirely but apparently not, because I need the ALSA MIDI stuff for my USB
keyboard.
I'm getting the following message at boot time:

Now, the reason I'm concerned about this is because I'm still getting Xruns on
my Mac Mini, even when using FreeBob for jackd, instead of ALSA.
I am using the ALSA drivers for MIDI. I'm wondering if some of the slowness is
due to this "polling mode".
1) Does the "polling mode" apply to all the ALSA drivers (i.e. the snd driver)
or just the snd_hda_intel? My MIDI appears to be coming through snd_seq_midi
via snd_seq_device via snd_usb_audio via snd. If it's polling, I'm wondering
if that's what's been slowing down my whole system.
2) How can I get this goddamned chip out of "polling mode"??
3) If I rmmod the snd_hda_intel, can I get snd and its variants to go back into
interrupt mode? Or do I have to blacklist the snd_hda_intel at boot time in
order to get it to change modes?
I apologise for asking a bunch of stupid questions that indicate how completely
ignorant I am of how ALSA and all its drivers actually work. But I really just
want to get this machine running properly, and I'm getting frustrated.
