I think I just set up my default mixer element to control softvol on
the default pcm device.  Which affects the iec958 as well.  I think.
I just pieced together the conf file from examples online--I don't
really understand too much about all this.

This was with mplayer (1.0_pre8) going to the default output device.
Setting the output device to dmix resulted in okay sound... but i'm
not sure whether I had volume control.  It was around this time I
figured out that I didn't need any config file anymore.

Oh right.  And sorry, I said intel8x0 but I screwed up.  Actually I'm
using hda-intel now.  The codec is Realtek ALC880.
