Reason being, I installed Mplayer which properly supports sending audio to various places and when I use the 5.1 plug, I get no sampling rate distortion on my audio. Whenever other applications (gnome system sounds, gaim, others...) send audio out, it gets a tinny haze to the sound, clearly due to some sampling mangling going on.
Also, if any source plays while mplayer is playing, the audio goes into chipmunk mode and I have to stop everything and ensure that only one source plays at a time.
MOREOVER, sometimes my sound just stops working all together.... ALSA has a lot of neat features, but sometimes I think it could afford to be more user friendly.
Anyway. Long story short, I just wanna have high quality audio without having to send an e-mail to each program writer saying "hey, support ALSA properly bub".
