Okay, I tried that. It did change the behavior, but it didn't solve the problem. Before, I would get sound out of the headphone jack, but not the speakers. By passing that parameter, I now get sound out of the speakers and plugging in headphones has no effect. Additionally, adding model=ref caused "IEC958" to appear in the mixer. The soundcard in my desktop machine is an Audigy 2 and it's got all sorts of bells and whistles.
