Just in case anyone else has this problem, I have 'fixed' it. I needed to set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' from 3 to 0. Thus :
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ amixer get 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA',0 Capabilities: volume volume-joined Playback channels: Mono Capture channels: Mono Limits: 0 - 3 Mono: 3 [0%] [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ amixer set 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' 0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ~ $ amixer get 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA',0 Capabilities: volume volume-joined Playback channels: Mono Capture channels: Mono Limits: 0 - 3 Mono: 0 [0%] I don't remember monkeying with this value when it stopped working so maybe something changed it for me during an update, or maybe ALSA's behaviour has changed.
