I use Alsa support compiled in my kernel, not modules..

Is it better to use it as a module ?
Is there a chance to get more features when using Alsa compiled and
loaded as modules ?
Is it better to get latest alsa sources, compile them, and use them as modules ?

I have a CMI8738 chipset sound card, I get no front/rear volume
control in alsamixer..
My sound card is a 4.1, but there's only a master control witch
increase or descrease both outputs.. The card is cheap (Hercules Muse
Lt), but I'm pretty sure that it's possible to control these outputs
seperatly, as with a creative live card...

Is there a specific config file to enabled volume cursors in alsamixer ?

Currently, I run a kernel 2.6.17, and don't know exactly witch alsa
version it is.

Any idea welcome..
Thanks !
