If pcm0c isn't the device you need, it could be pcm1c, pcm2c, etc.
See http://alsa.opensrc.org/proc+asound+documentation to see if
it can help you figure out which device you want. 

Additionally, you could try running the app under aoss.
Further, I've found artsdsp will work in cases where aoss will not.
artsdsp is part of kde's arts sound system.
