Dmix is only needed on non-hardware mixing apps, yes. Regarding the
.asoundrc: I'm not sure it it is needed for aoss, however just using
the example from "man aoss" shouldn't harm. Or use: 

pcm.dsp0 {      type plug      slave.pcm "default" }

then you can be sure to still profit from any future changes to the
"default" alsa device.

Btw: You can listen to bbc in a standalone player as well using this
URL: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/realplayer/media/fmg2.ram

This even works in mplayer or xine, which have ALSA support. A pity
that BBC dropped its ogg streams some years ago ...
