With pleasure ..

.. I noticed the following error message repeated at least seven
times during boot today (following yesterday's upgrade of libasound2,
libasound2-dev, libasound2-doc) which I had not seen before ..

ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:0
amixer:Mixer attach hw:0 error: No such file or directory

..following this up, I discover that I cannot open - or have no -
alsamixer (I was using it a week ago) ..

Tux:~# amixer
ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such file or directory
Tux:~# alsamixer
ALSA lib control.c:816:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL default

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or
directory
Tux:~#

.. On trying to open gmix (Gnome 2.0 Mixer) I keep get

'No volume control elements and/or devices found'

.. and opening GNOME ALSA Mixer 0.9.6 I get a blank square with only
File>Properties/Preferences/Quit and Help>Contents/About options
.. with none of the usual control options.

I had first thought it may be muted, if upgraded, but alsamixer seems
to be missing.

I apt-installed alsamixergui on Deb unstable but get

'alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default. No such file or
directory'
